Self-Compassion, Positivity, Acceptance, and Forgiveness

At the center of happiness is self-compassion, acceptance and forgiveness.  Positive Psychology, Mindfulness, Acceptance, and Forgiveness are all great tools to help overcome negative emotions.  Below are worksheets, videos, and other resources geared towards helping you develop your own mindful self-compassion and acceptance.

The Power of Positivity and Taking in the Good

Barbara Fredrickson is a clinical psychologist, a professor at University of North Carolina, and the author of “Positivity.”  You have -- within you -- the fuel to thrive and to flourish, and to leave this world in better shape than you found it. Sometimes you tap into this fuel – other times you don’t. But the sad fact is that most people have no idea how to tap into this fuel or even recognize it when they do.  Learn about positive connections online at: Watch video on Positive Emotions

The Neuroscience of Happiness

Rick Hanson is a neuropsychologist and author of Buddha’s Brain: the practical neuroscience of happiness, love, and wisdom.  He focuses on the fact that “Your brain acts like Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive ones”...the remedy is not to suppress negative experiences; when they happen, and to also hold or savor positive experiences.  Videos and articles pertaining to shame, self-worth, good intentions, and gratitude: www.rickhanson.net

The Concept of Radical Acceptance

Tara Brach is the author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge (2013).  She is the founder of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington, DC and is a clinical psychologist whose approach combines Eastern spirituality with Western psychology.  She has a number of videos online that focus on freeing ourselves from suffering: www.tarabrach.com

The Healing Power of Emotion

Daniel Siegel is a professor of medicine at UCLA studying family interactions with an emphasis on how attachment experiences influence emotions, behavior, autobiographical memory and narrative.  He is the author of several books regarding mindfulness, parenting and human development, including The Healing Power of Emotion.  Find awareness and meditation exercises at: www.dansiegel.com

Trusting Doubt: Deconstructing Fundamentalist Christian Beliefs

Valerie Tarico is the author of Trusting Doubt: A Former Evangelical Looks at Old Beliefs in a New Light. Like her, many Christians today realize that blind or forced faith, in the midst of doubt, is not a path to God or goodness.  The video on the left is produced by Dr. Tarico.  She is also the creator of Wisdom Commons, an interactive website that seeks to elevate our shared moral core, sometimes called universal ethics at: www.wisdomcommons.com
