Treating Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, and Fear

Living a life filled with anxiety, worry, panic, fear or avoidance can be a real downer.  There are ways at improving how you feel when it comes to connecting with others in social situations, reducing your worrying, letting go of fears and phobias, and overcoming your desire to avoid.  Below are a set of resources that I have found helpful in treating anxiety and living a more relaxing life.

Depression Part Two

I remember being endlessly entertained by the adventures of my toys. Some days they died repeated, violent deaths, other days they traveled to space or discussed my swim lessons and how I absolutely should be allowed in the deep end of the pool, especially since I was such a talented doggy-paddler.

Depression - TEDxYouth Talk - Kevin Breel

“My story is this, four simple words - ‘I suffer from depression’.  Beneath my smile was pain... for a large part of my life I feared myself... that fear made me feel forced into a corner with only one-way out.  Depression isn’t chicken pox, you don’t beat it once and its gone forever, you work at keeping it at bay.  What makes it tough is the stigma, so you hold it in and hide it, because the stigma around depression is real.  We are so supportive of any part of the body breaking down, except the brain... We need to build a world where we accept each other, instead of denying who we are.”  Click here for Kevin’s website.

Zindel Segal - “The Mindful Way Through Depression.”  Zindel V. Segal is a cognitive psychologist, a specialist on depression and one of the founders of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).  A professor of psychiatry at University of Toronto, Segal combines mindfulness with conventional cognitive behavioral therapy, which teaches patients to observe sadness or unhappiness without judgment.

Rick Hanson - “Hardwiring Happiness: The Hidden Power of Everyday Experiences on the Modern Brain.  How to overcome the Brain's Negativity Bias.  Rick Hanson is a neuropsychologist and the author of Hardwiring Happiness: The New Brain Science of Contentment, Calm, and Confidence, best selling author of Buddha's Brain, founder of the Wellspring Institute for Neuroscience and Contemplative Wisdom and an Affiliate of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, he's been an invited speaker at Oxford, Stanford, and Harvard, and taught in meditation centers worldwide.

Andrew Solomon - “The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality, and it was vitality that seemed to seep away from me in that moment." In a talk equal parts eloquent and devastating, writer Andrew Solomon takes you to the darkest corners of his mind during the years he battled depression. That led him to an eye-opening journey across the world to interview others with depression — only to discover that, to his surprise, the more he talked, the more people wanted to tell their own stories.
